Tales From The Mouse House...Ep 88

Well, welcome to Episode 88 of Tales From The Mouse House Disneyland Podcast!!! YAHOO! We’ve got a special sort of different kind of show for you today! Instead of our usual format, we change things up a bit and launch a (possibly) NEW style - FREE STYLIN’!! We go off script and share some of our favorite things about the Disneyland Resort! You’ve GOT to tune in to this EXTRA LARGE episode to find out!

Ok, we'll give you a hint: we decided to come up with a series of questions, like, what's your favorite attraction, that sort of thing. Then we'll reveal what we answered then discuss. Now, neither of us knows what the other answered so some things may be the same, some different. Joyce came up with this idea, to shake things up a bit and keep things FRESH. So, if you like it, be sure to thank her...WE certainly enjoyed recording this episode! We had a lot of fun and Joyce actually said this was her favorite show to record - out of the MANY, MANY we've done in almost FOUR years!

We'd LOVE for you guys to get in to this fun! How about, after listening, you come up with your own answers to the questions we posed each other and email them to us at talespodcast@cox.net.

Oh, our GREAT friend Dean Carrington sent us a terrific gift, actually two. He sent us a couple copies of a new Disney Hyperion Publishing book called Big Rig. Dean is friends with the illustrator of this awesome children's book, set in the Cars world, and both are autographed by the narrator! One for us and one for...whoever wins the contest we're launching soon!! So, be sure to keep an ear out!

Tales From The Mouse House Disneyland Podcast...Episode 78

Welcome to episode 78 of Tales From The Mouse House Disneyland Podcast! Well, we're back to a more 'normal' format this time around. No special interviews. No special coverage. Just us. Doing what we do. Sharing Disney Magic with YOU!

So, we kind of went a little long in Host Chat. What can we say? We had a lot to share. But it's fun. Well, kind of. Joyce and I chatted about what's going on around the old Tales House including what we HOPE is the start of a cooler season here in Arizona. Man it's been HOT! I mean like, Africa hot! Today was kind of a nice day, overcast, rainy. But still on the warm side but hey, it's a start, right?

Narrated by Al Kessel
We also chatted about my (Al) recent audiobook completion. This one marks number six for me and is titled The Warrior and the Flower, by Camille Picott. This was truly a fun book to narrate. I know what you're thinking: you HAVE to say that. Well, not really. But I really mean it. This was really a great novel. It's an Asian Fantasy, all about this ragged and worn warrior who adopts an eight year old girl. Well, saves her from a life of misery really. While he's trying to figure out just how to raise a little girl, he's also battling some pretty nasty villains in an effort to save the World Kingdom from total anarchy. See? Told you it was fun! The audiobook was approved recently by the author and should be up for purchase by the end of September at audible.com and iTunes.

And of course, we shared a couple reviews. Joyce shared a few of her favorite attractions at Disneyland, and I shared a food review on Disneyland's Rancho Del Zocallo. If you like Mexican food, well, trust me, you'll have to tune in to my review.

PLUS, and this is AWESOME news...our great friend and podcast sponsor Randy Crane from Mouse Ear Vacations has signed on for another sponsorship year! It's great to have Randy as part of the Tales Family and we're both very grateful for all he's done for the show. Thanks Randy! Everyone, send Randy a BIG thank you on Facebook!!

We'll be sharing Faye Crane's D23 Expo coverage in an upcoming blog this week, so if you missed her episode (76), you can read all about it. Then go back and listen. Cuz there's no excuse. You MUST listen!!

Congrats Jason!
What else....OH, we also announced the winner of our Ben G. Pirates Of The Caribbean Four Movie Blu-Ray Collection Trivia Contest Giveaway! We had a LOT of entries this time around, but only a few were correct. And the lucky winner of that AWESOME giveaway is....(insert drumroll here) Jason Gordon! Congrats Jason! Thanks to EVERYONE for entering and keep an ear out for some great contests coming up soon.

Tales From The Mouse House Disneyland Podcast...Episode 75

Welcome to Tales From The Mouse House Disneyland Podcast, Episode 75 (really...not like last time), our Video tribute to the Disney D23 Expo!
2011 Disney D23 Expo!

On this video episode, we share some highlights from the 2011 Disney D23 Fan Expo in Anaheim, California! We figured since the 2013 Expo was in full swing, AND since we couldn’t attend, we’d share some of the fun times we had at the last Expo to happen in California. We had a lot of fun, and yep, we were TIRED at the end of every day. But...FUN.

History Of The Disneyland Hotel
One of the panels we went to, and include a small bit of it in this episode, was the Amazing Vault Discovery! A History of the Disneyland Hotel. This was an AWESOME presentation to say the least. We were shown some never before seen video of the grand opening of the Disneyland Hotel, which was broadcast on television! We saw cool things like the shopping mall inside, the comfy beds AND...the GIANT 13 inch televisions in EVERY ROOM! Now, we do have the complete presentation (which was about an hour long!) on video. Just check out Minnie MouseCast 11 for that.
John Lassiter announcing the Pixar Stamps

Although we couldn't get into every panel we wanted to during the 2011 D23 Expo, we did see quite a few. It was awesome getting a sneak peak at Disney's Prep and Landing Christmas special, and seeing John Lassiter presented with the official Pixar U.S. Postage Stamp series. We were even given one of the pre-release stamps! LOVE SWAG!!
Great friends and authors, Nancy Rodrigue and David Smith

Joyce, Al and Lisa Robertson

We were granted one press credential for the 2013 Disney D23 Expo, but unfortunately we were not in a position to make the trip (if you follow us at all you all know about our "life" upheaval back in March of this year). BUT...we WERE able to transfer our credentials to the wife of our awesome sponsor Randy Crane, Faye, who is covering the Expo for Tales From The Mouse House! She's been feeding us daily summaries, and will be writing up a complete Expo Rundown for us soon. AND, lucky YOU, she'll be joining us on an upcoming episode to discuss all the wonderfully magical experiences she had! So..be sure to stay tuned for that!

AWESOME! Autographed Pirates Of The Caribbean Art!

Tales From The Mouse House Disneyland Podcast....Episode 73 VIDEO

***HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY WIFE JOYCE!!!***

Welcome to Tales From The Mouse House Disneyland Podcast Episode 73 - Video Voiceover Special!! Thanks for our good friend and awesome listener Doug E. for suggesting another of his favorite episodes...the Video Voiceover (imagine this was said with a LOT of echo and dramatic music). So Doug...here you are...a video...you know, voiceover episode! On this episode we take you on a tour of the Main Street Opera House and all the wonderful Disneyland exhibits. Now, if you've not paid a visit to this awesome attraction, you really should. There is SO much Disneyland history inside that you'll kick yourself for not seeing it sooner! Who needs the D23 Expo...when you've got THIS?!
Exhibit Inside Mainstreet Opera House

Disneyland's Mainstreet Opera House

We also take you back in time to our very first visit to Disneyland together (and MY FIRST EVER VISIT) from September 2007. Now remember, this was pre-HD video for us, so some of the footage is a little grainy. You'll get to see the New Orleans Square train station, take a harrowing ride on one of Toontown's SCARIEST attractions, Gadget's Go Coaster and you'll finally get to see an extinct attraction that I covered a few episodes back, the infamous Maliboomer! And, we take you on a white water adventure over in California Adventure's Grizzly River Run where you'll meet some new friends.
Grizzly River Run

Speaking of my first visit to Disneyland, believe it or not, I can still remember it like it was 6 years ago! Ok, that was an attempt at humor. Seriously, I can still remember it like it was just a few months ago. I was so excited - AFTER I walked through the gates. Before...well, not so much. I was very much like a kid again after walking through the gates, and under that berm. We must have walked 80 miles (no exaggeration) on that vacation, just running here, then there, then back here. So much fun. It was then that my life changed forever. I thank my wonderful wife Joyce for introducing me to my Happy Place, and I thank Walt Disney for creating the getaway of my dreams. My life hasn't been the same since. But...that's a story for another day.

So, I just want to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my best friend and wife Joyce. Hope you had a wonderful day honey. And I want to remind you all that if you're thinking of taking a trip to Disneyland, or heck anywhere for that matter, give our good friend and sponsor Randy Crane from Mouse Ear Vacations a shout. He CAN get you the best deal in town. Check out his website at www.randyc-mouseearvacations.com

Oh, and if you're looking for a good audiobook to listen to, check out storytellerpodcasts.com for the books I've narrated. Some awesome stuff there!

Tales From The Mouse House Disneyland Podcast...Episode 72

Welcome to Tales From The Mouse House Disneyland podcast EPISODE 72! Wow, another audio episode for your Disney enjoyment! Well, we had a lot of fun on this episode, but also....well, in our Host Chat segment, ONE of us kind of goes off on a rant (ok, it was ME - Al). Couldn't be helped. I had something to get off my chest and thought it should be shared. Ok, before you actually listen to the show, I'll put up a bit of a warning. I vent about Disney's D23 a bit because of recent events, and not so recent events. I thought long and hard before including that on our show, but I thought that it wouldn't be right if we only shared the great things about Disney (and trust us, there are a LOT of great and awesome things about Disney...) and swallowed our opinions on the things we thought don't work. That would be a huge disservice to you and to us. We may offend some, but you know what? We are all about being TRUE to ourselves and delivering an HONEST show to you. Doing anything else would be wrong, even if that means offending some folks, and ruining our chances at being included in Disney sponsored events. If lying to you and to ourselves is what it takes to be invited to those events, then I guess we'll relegate ourselves to never being included!

California Adventure's Wold Of Color
Ok, on with the FUN stuff. On this episode, Joyce reviews one of our favorite additions to Disney California Adventure - The World Of Color. We still remember when they drained Paradise Bay and constructed the jets and things...it was awesome. Then, when they actually began testing them...well, you'll have to tune in to find THAT out! Hey, can't give away EVERYTHING, can I??

Then, in Food Reviews, I cover a cool out of the way place in Disneyland's Critter Country that we overlooked for YEARS! Walked past it hundreds of times and NEVER saw it...until our last visit. Suffice it to say, Harbour Galley is one of the neatest places to grab some grub that you never saw! They even have a great deck to relax on that gives you a terrific view of the Rivers Of America, where you can watch the Mark Twain and the Columbia lazily sail on by. Oh, and you'll have to tune in to hear about an AWESOME little known spot by Harbour Galley where you can watch a LOT of fun in action!
Harbour Galley

As we shared on episode 71, we've added to our Hidden Treasures segment. Instead of just sharing the awesome little gems in and around the Resort that we feel are true Hidden Treasures, we're going to start sharing lots of other things too, like audio clips, music, that sort of thing, that WE feel enhances that Disney Magic and furthers our cause to spread the Disney Love to as many as we can! Plus...we launched a new "contest" where you can win your very own copy of David W. Smith's In The Shadow Of The Matterhorn: Stories about Life, Love and Laughter at Disneyland audiobook!
Win YOUR audiobook copy!

Tales From The Mouse House....Episode 68

Happy Easter and welcome to episode 68! We're back to a more...."normal" format on this episode! We discuss all kinds of fun stuff in our Host Chat, like, the crazy weather in Arizona and how it's creating all kinds of misery.....like Joyce's allergies raging full speed ahead! Because of the weird weather - one week it was freezing cold, the next HOT, then the next cold, well, you get the picture, all the desert plants are blooming early and in full force. So, poor Joyce is suffering horribly from it. Oh, and we have a winner in our audiobook giveaway! Tune in to find out WHO! If you "LIKE" our FaceBook page, keep an eye out because we're going to launch another contest this coming week on FaceBook for...yep, ANOTHER copy of the audiobook!
Oh how we MISS THEE!

And of course, as many of you already know, I (Al) am without formal employment (nice way to put it, huh?) so I've been really working on my VoiceOver stuff. In fact, Joyce and I decided to take our podcast production "company" and turn it in to a legitimate COMPANY. We're calling it Storyteller Productions (cuz, well, we tell stories...) and I've embarked on a fun voiceover career. I've taken our good friend Dave Smith's (author of In The Shadow Of The Matterhorn) advice and have begun seeking audiobook narration gigs. And I've got FOUR in production right now! One is a book I'm REALLY suited for: a Walt Disney biography! YEAH!!
Brand New Audiobook!

In our Attraction Reviews, I start a new series reviewing extinct attractions, but only ones that were around since 2007 when we started visiting. Should be fun! And in Food Reviews, Joyce discusses some alternatives for those Resort Guests who would rather have something not of the meat variety!

Joyce and I really want to thank all of you who tune in to our fun little show. We truly have a passion for Walt Disney and his beloved Disneyland, and we're honored that you allow us to share that love with you!

Tales From The Mouse House...Episode 65

Welcome to Episode 65 of Tales From The Mouse House Disneyland Podcast! Well, on this...INSANELY crazy episode, we get a little...slap-happy during Host Chat and do something we rarely do - RANT! But at least we had fun, right? FUN...uh-huh!

It seems like it's been awhile since we chatted at you all, but in reality, it really hasn't. Our last episode was a video voiceover, but episode 63 was a "regular" formatted show...but like we said...crazy episode...a bit, how to put it...silly?
Mad T Party

Believe it or not, we actually DO cover some great stuff on this episode - In our Attraction Review, I cover Hollywoodland’s newest after dark blowout - Mad T Party. Now without giving too much away, this newest "RAVE" get together isn't really my "cup of tea" (get it??? See how I did that? Funny, huh?) but suffice it to say, this is another sight to behold as only Disney can do it! Joyce reviews a totally radical place to get your grindage on inside the brand new Carsland in Disney California Adventure in Food Reviews. Now, this "groovy" place will certainly "fill" you "more" than other places...(that's a hint by the way).
A "Filling" Place to Eat in Carsland

Then in Hidden Treasures, we both discuss a couple of awesome examples of Disneyland history that you won't want to miss. In fact, the one I (Al) cover plays a big role in the biography "In The Shadow Of The Matterhorn: Intimate Stories about Life, Love and Laughter at Disneyland" by famed author David W. Smith. A book that was recently converted into an audiobook and narrated by...ME! This witty and heartwarming look at the life of a former Disneyland Cast Member is now on sale in paperback and soon to be released as an audiobook on Amazon.com, Audible.com and iTunes. We'll update you when it becomes available for purchase!
Now An Audiobook!

Oh by the way, we also share a couple of awesome tips that WILL help you get the most out of your Disneyland Resort Vacation, which by the way, you can book through our podcast sponsor, Randy Crane from Mouse Ear Vacations. Visit Randy at www.randyc-mouseearvacations.com. Be sure to stick around to the VERY end of the podcast...just in case we put in a couple...BLOOPERS!

Tales From The Mouse House...Episode 64

Town Of Rainbow Ridge - Big Thunder Mountain
Welcome to Episode 64 of Tales From The Mouse House Disneyland Podcast...a special Video Voiceover episode! YAH!! On this episode, we share some pretty action-packed attraction videos with you and give you our thoughts and maybe some interesting little tidbits, as we watch WITH you! Well, sort of.

Big Thunder Mine
So, what attractions you ask? Glad you asked. First up is Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Frontierland, Disneyland. As you may or may not know, Big Thunder opened on September 2, 1979 and has been a fan favorite ever since...designed by legendary Disney Imagineer Tony Baxter, the concept actually came from fellow Imagineer Marc Davis's Western River Expedition, a western themed pavilion at the Magic Kingdom! This ride has a little of everything: runaway train; collapsing mine shafts; earthquakes; rattlesnakes and a goat with dynamite! YIKES!

Radiator Springs
Radiator Springs Racers
Our next stop is Radiator Springs Racers, in Carsland inside Disney California Adventure. Now this...THIS is a ride! Radiator Springs Racers, along with Carsland, opened to very eager guests on June 15, 2012 and has honestly been packed nearly every day since. Carsland is of course, based on the popular Disney/Pixar Cars franchise, which features a world of animated and LIVING cars! First anounced in 2006, Carsland was one of the most anticipated Lands of Disney in quite some time. Radiator Springs Racers allows guests the opportunity to take a tour through the majestic Ornament Valley on a leisurely top-down drive...until you run into a slight problem. You're flung tail-fins first into a wild RACE! After speaking with Doc Hudson, you're off in a head-to-head race with another car. Who will win?! Well, for THAT answer, you'll have to watch episode 64, now won't you?!

Of course, Carsland is one of our favorites so in an upcoming video episode, we'll share our Carsland Walk-Through, which highlights the awesome detail of the most Imagined areas in Disneyland, both day and night. So be sure to subscribe to the podcast (if you don't already).
Ornament Valley

We hope you enjoy our little Tales From The Mouse House Disneyland Podcast, because we sure LOVE bringing it to you. As we've said many times, Walt Disney and his beloved Disneyland have become such huge parts of our lives, and the Magic Walt created inspires us each and every day. We truly love spreading that Magic to as many people as we can!

Tales From The Mouse House...Episode 61

Welcome to episode 61 of Tales From The Mouse House Disneyland Podcast! As many of you know, each year from mid-November to early January, the Disneyland Resort is transformed into a Winter Holiday Wonderland, complete with lights, Holiday music and believe it or not...SNOW! Well, among these wonderful treats, another annual Christmas tradition at the Resort is the Candlelight Processional Ceremony. A tradition beginning in 1958, each year, the Disneyland Resort hosts a celebration of the Season with beautiful orchestral and choir music, a wonderful Candlelight narration of the Biblical Christmas Story, presented by many of entertainments biggest names (like John Wayne, Gregory Peck, James Stewart, James Earl Jones, Carry Grant and many more!). This year was no different, in fact, Disney expanded this Holiday treat to 20 nights!
2012 Disneyland Candlelight Processional

Unfortunately we were not able to attend this prestigious event, but our great friend Mr. Daps and his crew not only attended many of the nights, but they filmed them as well! And being the AWESOME guy Mr. Daps is, he has graciously agreed to allow us to share the audio from one of the most highly anticipated of the 2012 Processionals - narrated by Mr. Dick Van Dyke! Mr. Van Dyke is a Legend in the Disney community...in fact, he IS a Disney Legend! His presentation of the Christmas Story, despite some wetter than desired conditions (it rained!), is masterfully delivered. We're honored to bring you this special Holiday treat! We hope you enjoy the show.

If you’d like to view this or any of the 2012 Candlelight Processional videos by Mr. Daps, check out his website at www.dapsmagic.com or his YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/mrdaps.

Be sure to join us next week for our special Christmas Greetings episode! We'll share some of our favorite Holiday stories, some fun Holiday Attractions and Shows at the Disneyland Resort that we enjoy, (hopefully) some of YOUR Holiday stories and...a special interview with a man we're sure you ALL will know! Ok, a little hint: he has a great white beard, awesome dimples and when he laughs, he tummy jiggles like a bowl full of jelly! So, be sure to send in your Holiday stories, or if you'd just like to say Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas to us or someone you know, we'd LOVE to share them!!

Happiest Blog On Earth...Integrity in Disney

Partners - Not just a Statue!

Well, it's been awhile, hasn't it? I could list off SO many excuses for not blogging more but...hey, in an election year who needs to hear more excuses! Suffice it to say, life's gotten in the way of more, shall we say enjoyable pursuits. Now that the house cleaning item is taken care of, on with the blog....

So, a lot has happened since my last blog. Joyce and I launched a new podcast (Lost Flight 815), we finally had some pretty good Monsoon storms, oh, and the U.S. put a man on the moon! Can you BELIEVE IT? THE MOON! Ok, well, that last one was just to point out how long it's been since I've blogged (sorry, my ill-sense of humor!). But, anyway...I've got a lot to blog about but there is one topic in particular that has been stewing in my soul lately and I really felt I needed to share it.

Integrity. Yep. Integrity. According to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, integrity is one of the most important and oft cited terms of virtue for the human species. They claim integrity refers to a quality of a person's character that refers to wholeness, or the purity of something. For example, when one has integrity, they bring a complete honesty to something. They act with a high moral regard. More often than not, a person with high integrity acts with the best interest of the "whole", to advance or bring a positive light upon something. In other words, the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. You're probably asking me right now why I'm imparting a philosophy lesson on you. Well my friends, read on. My point will become clearer!

When Joyce and I became part of the Disney community through our podcast, Tales From The Mouse House Disneyland Podcast, we made the very conscience choice to present the items we claim as fact with the highest amount of integrity we possibly can. If we are not 100% certain of something, we either don't present it, or we present it with the disclaimer that the information has not yet been confirmed. And we've found MANY others in the Disney community who feel the same way: Lisa Robertson from Babes In Disneyland (in fact, she's started an Integrity in Blogging movement that we are part of); Mr. Daps from Daps Magic and Geeks Corner (VERY integrity driven organization); our own podcast sponsor and fellow podcaster Randy Crane from Mouse Ear Vacations and the Stories of the Magic podcast is VERY integrity driven. There are many more I could mention, but to honor the constraints of time, won't.

It's extremely important to act with integrity when you tell others that you are a "source of Disney news". Let's face it, there are so many people who LOVE Disney, and Disneyland, Disney World, etc, that are eager to learn things about their favorite passion. And there is an equal number of sources available to gather all kinds of information on Disney - some very honorable and reputable, and some...well, not so much so. Now, I'm not pointing any fingers at all, because that's not my style, but I just want everyone to be aware that there are sources out there that will take rumors and notions of rumors and pass them off as fact. That's dangerous. You see, if I'm a newbie (someone new to Disney) who just wants to absorb all I can about Disneyland, and I stumble across a source that says that Disneyland is going to give away FREE Annual Passports for the next week, and I go to Disneyland only to find that this is in fact...NOT true, well my view on Disney is now quite sullied. I begin to tell others that this happened, then they tell others, and by the time this completes the cycle, the story is now that Disneyland promised this guy a free Annual Passport and then told him NO. Doesn't matter if the story is true, it is what it becomes. And yes, I know this may sound like a rather exaggerated example and it is, but the concept is the same. Rumors are just that: rumors. Not the truth, not fact. If that original source had instead relayed that the Annual Passport story was only a rumor and not confirmed, the outcome would have been different. And this may sound pretty unbelievable, but the truth is, there are sources out there passing rumors off as fact. Intentionally, unintentionally, doesn't really matter. If a story does not come from Disney, then it's only a rumor and should be presented as such. Just my opinion.

Joyce and I love Disneyland. We love DISNEY. Since my first visit to Disneyland in 2007 I've been head over heels crazy about the place. I feel that Disneyland represents a purity and innocence that a lot of us really crave in our lives. Walt Disney inspired countless people to pursue their dreams relentlessly and to act with the utmost integrity. Yes, he was a businessman. Yes the Walt Disney Company IS a business but you know what? The IDEA of Disney ISN'T a business and the IDEA of Disney is what should be protected. By acting with integrity, we can protect that idea. For those of us who embark on the "mission" to be, for lack of a better term, ambassadors for the Disney Magic, it is our responsibility to act with honor and integrity. To report NEWS, not rumors. If we've heard or learned something that MAY be true and feel we just NEED to pass that information along, we should tack on the disclaimer that this just may not be true, it just may be a rumor, but...no matter what we do, we should always Partner with Disney.

So, to close out this soap-box blog, I'd like to offer some advice to all who come to this happy place, unless the news comes directly from Disney or a Disney approved source, take it for what it's worth: rumor. Seek out more information before you pass that rumor along. Oh, and remember....Make It A MICKEY Day!!! ~~~ Al
